Certification BS 25999

What is Business Continuity Management (BCM)?

Standard BS 25999 (Business Continuity Management) was created to satisfy the needs of customers, clients, government, regulators and all interested parties. Implementation Business Continuity Management (BCM) gives your clients assurance that you will be capable of managing business continuity at a time of disruption. Certification demonstrates to your customers, suppliers, staff and investors that you follow the best practices laid down in standard BS 25999 ( Business Continuity Management ). Certification shows your Business Continuity Management (BCM) system has passed a independent inspection. Certification is a visible way of meeting your customers' expectations and emphasis due diligence to key stakeholders.

Independent advantages of BCM

  • Procedures of BCM will either minimize the probability of the threats occurring, or of their impacts affecting the continuity of the organization.
  • We can minimize the probability of the threats occurring, or of their impacts affecting the continuity of the organization and that means you can make the right decisions quickly, cut downtime and minimize financial losses.
  • Showing that you have BCM in place by being certified to BS 25999 is one way of proving this.
  • The using of standards enhances productivity and competitiveness.
  • This better understanding of an organization can lead to the improvement and streamlining of processes and potentially even cost reductions.
  • You can be confident that consensus based BCM standards such as BS 25999 can make supply chains more robust, improve enterprise stability, increase job security and ensure the flow of money into communities.
  • Having standards in place not only helps with the management of current operations, but also aids future growth.
  • Having a BCM program in place means you can illustrate to customers or clients how you may be able to recover your operation within just a few hours if you were say to lose your capability to operate from your existing location.
  • The planning that goes into a BCM program, especially the business impact analysis, can often be a way of taking stock of an entire organization's processes.
  • The effective handling of any incident - particularly a large-scale one - can have a positive effect on a company's market value.
  • This better understanding of an organization can lead to the improvement and streamlining of processes and potentially even cost reductions.
  • Successfully navigating a potentially devastating incident can significantly increase customer confidence in an organization. In the case of an industry-wide incident, a company may be judged against its competitors on how the incident is managed.
  • Having good Business Continuity Management is great for your reputation even after an adverse event.
  • Things such as loss of business opportunities, loss of reputation, the cost of losing current business customers, the erosion of brand value and new products and services being delayed or cancelled.

Who need that?

Business Continuity Management is relevant to any organization, large or small, from any sector. Practically, there is little doubt that the ability to survive an incident and be able to get back to business as soon as possible is a requirement of doing business in today's risk averse world It is particularly relevant for those organizations which operate in high risk environments such as finance, telecommunications, transport and the public sector, where the ability to continue operating is essential, both for the organization itself, and its customers and stakeholders.

This may not be for every organization, but if you are in a very competitive sector and you are a key supplier to anyone then it is surely something to think about earlier rather than later.

LesTest carries out evaluations of requirements of BS 25999 for organizations and industrial companies and issues certificates, and also development & implementation of BCM programs.

The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.
